Why We have Created Bunica Maria – And Why Birders Trust Us

My name is Andrei Prodan, and I run Bunica Maria – Guesthouse for birders in Mahmudia, at the edge of the Danube Delta.

When we created Bunica Maria, we did not want to build a luxury resort. We wanted to build a place where people can experience the Delta in a calm, honest and human way. Over time, we’ve learned that this clarity is exactly what builds trust.

This is who we are — and who we are not.

We Believe in Local Knowledge Over Academic Formality

I am not an academic ornithologist. My guiding is based on years of field experience in the Delta — observing seasonal changes, understanding water levels, knowing nesting areas and reading the landscape.

I know:

  • Where birds feed depending on the season
  • How wind and light affect observation and photography
  • How to position a boat quietly and respectfully
  • How to adapt the pace to my guests

For first-time birders, photographers, families, couples and older travellers, this practical knowledge often matters more than technical terminology.

I prefer guiding in a way that feels welcoming, not intimidating. Guests should feel comfortable asking questions, learning step by step and enjoying the moment.

I Choose a Slower Rhythm on Purpose

Some tours in the Delta focus on maximizing species counts with very long hours in the field.

That is not my philosophy.

I offer slow, relaxed birding — enough time to observe properly, take photographs, breathe and enjoy the landscape. I have seen how this rhythm:

  • Reduces fatigue
  • Increases satisfaction
  • Creates deeper memories
  • Encourages guests to return

The Delta is not a checklist. It is an experience.

Our Guesthouse Is Simple — And That Is Intentional

Bunica Maria – Guesthouse for birders is simple but comfortable.

We offer:

  • Clean, functional rooms
  • A quiet atmosphere
  • Home-style hospitality
  • Good food
  • A place to rest properly after birding

We are not a luxury resort. We do not offer spa facilities or five-star design. The focus here is nature, not luxury.

Guests who come expecting that kind of environment are happy — because what we promise is exactly what we deliver.

Who are we Ideal For

Over the years, we have understood clearly who benefits most from staying with us:

  • First-time birders
  • Photographers
  • Families
  • Couples
  • Older travellers
  • Nature lovers who prefer small groups

If someone is looking for ultra-intensive listing tours or luxury accommodation, I honestly recommend they explore other specialised operators. There is space in the Delta for different experiences.

Being transparent about this has only strengthened our reputation.

Why Mahmudia Is a Special Base

From Mahmudia, we have quick access to diverse habitats — reedbeds, open channels, wetlands like Carasuhat and the panoramic landscapes of the Bestepe Hills.

This combination allows us to explore efficiently without rushing, always adapting to conditions and seasons.

Location matters — but how you use it matters even more.

Trust Comes From Clarity

I describe Bunica Maria simply:

Slow, relaxed birding with local guides, in simple but comfortable surroundings where the focus is on nature, not luxury.

When guests understand this before they arrive, expectations match reality. That alignment builds trust.

We do not try to be everything to everyone.
We try to be exactly right for the people who value authenticity, patience and human connection.

And in my experience, that honesty is what makes guests return.
