Early this morning, while watching the sky above the wetlands near Mahmudia, I noticed a distant formation slowly approaching from the south. At first they were just silhouettes against the pale spring sky.
Then the shapes became unmistakable.
The first flock of Great White Pelican of the season was arriving in the Danube Delta.
For birders who spend time in this extraordinary wetland, this moment is always special. The return of pelicans marks the true beginning of the spring bird migration season.
A Classic Sign That Migration Has Started
The flock circled high above the landscape, riding a rising thermal before gliding north toward the inner lakes of the delta. There were around twenty birds, their enormous wings stretched wide as they travelled effortlessly across the sky.
Pelicans are masters of energy-efficient flight. With wingspans approaching three and a half meters, they often migrate by soaring and gliding, barely flapping their wings for long stretches.
Watching them arrive is always one of the most memorable early spring birding moments in the delta.
Within the next weeks, many more pelicans will follow.
Why the Danube Delta Is So Important for Pelicans
The Danube Delta is one of the most important breeding areas in Europe for the Great White Pelican.
The vast reedbeds, shallow lakes, and rich fish populations provide perfect conditions for:
- feeding
- nesting colonies
- safe breeding sites
- large communal roosts
By late spring, hundreds and sometimes thousands of pelicans can be seen feeding across the delta’s lakes and lagoons.
Birding Around Mahmudia During Early Migration
The village of Mahmudia sits at the edge of some of the most productive birding habitats in the delta.
Early spring birding here is particularly exciting because migrants begin arriving gradually, creating constantly changing bird activity.
Typical early migrants seen around Mahmudia include:
- pelicans
- herons and egrets
- cormorants
- early warblers in reedbeds
- birds of prey moving north
For visiting birders, the landscapes around Mahmudia provide an excellent starting point for exploring the delta.
Carasuhat: One of the Best Birding Spots Near Mahmudia
Just outside the village lies one of the most interesting wetland restoration areas in the region: Carasuhat.
This wetland has quickly become a magnet for birds.
Shallow waters and abundant fish attract feeding pelicans, while the surrounding reedbeds host a wide variety of species during migration.
Birders visiting the Carasuhat area during spring can often observe:
- pelicans feeding in groups
- squacco herons and night herons
- glossy ibis
- marsh harriers hunting low over reeds
- flocks of migrating passerines
Because the water levels create ideal feeding conditions, pelicans frequently gather here during migration.
Watching Migration from the Bestepe Hills
A short distance away, the rolling landscapes of the Bestepe Hills offer another excellent vantage point for birdwatchers.
From these higher areas it is possible to observe:
- soaring pelicans
- migrating storks
- raptors moving north
- large flocks of waterbirds traveling across the delta
On clear mornings, the sky above the hills can fill with migrating birds taking advantage of warm thermals.
The Delta Comes Back to Life
The arrival of the first pelicans signals that winter is ending in the delta.
Over the coming weeks the wetlands will rapidly fill with birdlife as migration intensifies. Reedbeds that were quiet during winter will soon be alive with song, while lakes and channels will host thousands of birds preparing for the breeding season.
For birders and wildlife photographers, this is the beginning of one of the most exciting times of the year.
