Tag Protected areas Romania

Protected areas in Romania safeguard some of Europe’s most valuable ecosystems, including the Carpathian Mountains and the Danube Delta. The Carpathians host extensive old-growth forests, alpine meadows and large carnivore populations such as brown bear (Ursus arctos), wolf (Canis lupus) and lynx (Lynx lynx).

In contrast, the Danube Delta protects vast reedbeds, shallow lakes, alluvial wetlands and riparian forests that support over 250 bird species, including Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) and White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla).

Together, these protected areas contribute to Romania’s role as a biodiversity stronghold in Europe, preserving critical habitats, migration corridors and ecological processes across mountain and wetland landscapes.
