Tag Steppe habitats Romania

Steppe habitats in Romania represent some of the country’s most distinctive and ecologically valuable landscapes. The Dobrogea Plateau and the Bestepe Hills form part of the Pontic steppe zone, characterized by dry grasslands, rolling relief, limestone outcrops and xerophilous vegetation.

These open habitats support steppe-adapted bird species such as European Roller (Coracias garrulus), European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster), Crested Lark (Galerida cristata), Northern Weatear (Oenanthe oenanthe), Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio), and Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus). Reptiles, invertebrates, and drought-resistant plant communities further enhance biodiversity.

The combination of steppe grasslands and nearby wetlands of the Danube Delta creates a unique ecological gradient, making southeastern Romania one of Europe’s most diverse birding and conservation regions.
