Tag UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Danube Delta

The Danube Delta is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognizing its global ecological importance and exceptional biodiversity. As one of Europe’s most significant and well-preserved wetland ecosystems, the Delta protects vast reedbeds, shallow lakes, alluvial wetlands, sandbanks and riparian forests.

The Biosphere Reserve status supports conservation of over 250 bird species, including Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus), Pygmy Cormorant (Microcarbo pygmaeus) and White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). It also safeguards mammals such as Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra), diverse fish populations, amphibians like Marsh Frog (Pelophylax ridibundus), reptiles and extensive reed-dominated vegetation.

Through habitat protection, sustainable development, and scientific research, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation ensures the long-term preservation of the Delta’s ecological processes and migration corridors along the Western Palaearctic flyway.
