Tag Wetland ecosystems Europe

Wetland ecosystems in Europe represent some of the continent’s most productive and biologically diverse habitats, supporting complex hydrological processes and high species richness. Among the most significant are the Danube Delta and its Carasuhat Area near Mahmudia in southeastern Romania.

The Danube Delta, one of Europe’s most significant and well-preserved wetland ecosystems, includes vast reedbeds, shallow lakes, alluvial wetlands, sandbanks and riparian forests. It sustains over 250 bird species, including Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Pygmy Cormorant (Microcarbo pygmaeus), Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) and White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla).

The Carasuhat Area complements this system with shallow lacustrine habitats and seasonally flooded grasslands that function as important breeding and migratory stopover sites for waterbirds and waders. Together, these wetlands form a key component of the Western Palaearctic flyway and contribute significantly to Europe’s conservation network.
