Tag Wetland ecosystems Romania

Wetland ecosystems in Romania represent some of the most diverse and ecologically valuable habitats in Europe. The Danube Delta forms the core of Romania’s wetland network, comprising extensive reedbeds, shallow lakes, alluvial wetlands, sandbanks and riparian forests shaped by dynamic fluvial processes.

Complementing this system, the Carasuhat Area near Mahmudia includes shallow lacustrine habitats, reed-fringed waters and seasonally flooded grasslands that function as important breeding and migratory stopover sites. These wetlands support over 300 bird species, including Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), Pygmy Cormorant (Microcarbo pygmaeus), Ruff (Calidris pugnax) and numerous migratory passerines.

Romania’s wetland ecosystems also provide habitat for mammals such as Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra), amphibians like Marsh Frog (Pelophylax ridibundus), diverse fish assemblages and reed-dominated vegetation (Phragmites australis). Together, these habitats play a critical role in biodiversity conservation, hydrological regulation and migration connectivity along the Western Palaearctic flyway.
