Meet the Danube Delta - Birdwatching tour

Experience one of Europe’s most important wetland ecosystems on a one-day birdwatching and wildlife boat tour in the Danube Delta, a UNESCO-protected Biosphere Reserve where the Danube River flows into the Black Sea. This full-day guided tour offers an immersive nature experience in one of the best birdwatching destinations in Europe.

The tour includes approximately six hours on the water, navigating through the Delta’s diverse habitats: narrow freshwater channels, vast lakes, extensive reed beds, wetlands and floodplain forests. These ecosystems support more than 250 bird species and make the region a top location for bird watching, wildlife photography and eco-tourism in Romania.

Depending on the season, visitors may observe Great White Pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus), Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus), White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), Pygmy Cormorants (Microcarbo pygmeus), Grey and Purple Herons (Ardea cinerea, Ardea purpurea), Little Egrets (Egretta garzetta), Eurasian Spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia), Common Kingfishers (Alcedo atthis), as well as numerous ducks, terns, gulls, and migratory species. Spring and autumn migration periods offer particularly high bird diversity.

The boat tour is conducted in a small group and led by an experienced English-speaking local guide with in-depth knowledge of the Delta’s birdlife, seasonal patterns and hidden wildlife areas. Local expertise is essential in a landscape shaped by water, where many productive birdwatching zones are accessible only by boat and require understanding of natural conditions.

During the excursion, guests explore important conservation areas such as the Carasuhat Area, a successful wetland restoration site known for its rich biodiversity and excellent pelican and wader activity. The tour also includes a traditional lunch at a family-owned eco-lodge, where guests enjoy home-cooked Romanian dishes prepared with fresh local fish and regional ingredients, adding cultural authenticity to the wildlife experience.

The Danube River, Europe’s second-longest river, flows through ten countries before forming the Delta in Romania. Today, this vast wetland remains one of Europe’s last large-scale wilderness areas and a world-class destination for birdwatching, nature tours and responsible travel.

This one-day Danube Delta birdwatching tour is ideal for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers and travelers seeking a meaningful and authentic nature experience in Romania — even with limited time.

Top Reasons to Visit

  • The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve was included in the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1990 (UNESCO World Heritage) when it was recognised as a wetland of international importance, especially as a wildfowl habitat.
  • At 2,200 square miles, the Danube Delta is regarded as one of Europe’s largest wetlands, laced with branches of the main river, marshland, canals and reeded islands. It has the most extensive area of compact reed beds in the world.
  • The Danube Delta is the best preserved of Europe’s delta ecosystems. It is the perfect breeding ground for thousands of birds that migrate there from around the world. More than that, a Danube Delta birding watching tour can be a rewarding one year-round.
  • The Biosphere Reserve is the world’s third-largest area for biodiversity, following only Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands in the number of species (5,500 types of flora and fauna) it supports.
  • Important species found while on a Danube Delta bird watching tour include Pygmy Cormorant, White Pelican, Dalmatian Pelican, White-tailed Eagle, Ferruginous Duck, Red-breasted Goose, Glossy Ibis, Marsh Harrier, Purple Heron, Spoonbill, Kingfisher, Squacco Heron, White Stork, Caspian Tern, Red-footed Falcon and Roller.
  • Our Danube Delta Bird Watching tour also has a conservation focus, highlighting the Carasuhat area. Since 1993 this has been part of an ecological reconstruction project, returning former agricultural land in the Danube Delta to a natural habitat for breeding birds.

Our tour is concentrated on an ecological reconstruction area, Carasuhat, but also in the "traditional" Danube Delta: Litcov channel, Gorgova, Porcoava, Isac and Uzlina Lakes etc. Carasuhat area became a good place for bridding for some species: Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Waders, Terns, Gulls etc. During the boat trip you'll have the chance to see lot of birds.
